Ahoy mates and lassies.
I just recently got a new Sword. And when it arrived, I removed the scabard. It's a nice weapon to be sure. Nice brass hilt. Good weight. 440 Stainless Steel. However the blade seems to be a bit dirty. On one side of the blade it's sorta discolored. Like what ya find if ya mix water an' oil. Very rainbowy. On the other side. It's sticky. Seems to be like tree sap on the blade.
Any ideas how to clean the thing? Preferably for free 'cause I'm rather short on currancy.
Start with a good de-greaser, usually dish-washing soap is good..(greasy pots & Pans, ya know) That should remove most, if not all of the cosmoline, for any remainder, use mineral spirits, or rubbing alcohol. Do you know if it's chrome plated? If not, ya can use double 00 steel wool to give it a good cleaning, and buff the blade and brass up, but buff lightly, ya dont' wanna remove metal. The steel will stand up to a good rubbing, but go lightly on the brass. A light coat of mineral oil will also keep the brass shiny. Although, for a really high shine, ya need to get some white rouge,( like the sticks home depot has) and using an old t-shirt, buff everything...the gleam will blind yer opponents!
I gots a question.
I left one of me swords with a friend for about a month.
When I saw it again there were these small dots all over one side.
I'm assuming a soda was opened or spilled near the sword and he forgot to clean the blade.
By the time I got it back it had quite set in, tryed the steel wool to little affect.
Any suggestions? Apart from not letting him barrow my sword.
