Searchin' through many an old music book I notices a few familiar titles an lines. The Folk music process be a tremendous recyclin' juggernaut. Many 'o me favorites can be traced back ta the 1750's wi' only minor alterations ta verse. Examples I would give ye-
Flora- Peter Paul and Mary- Originally Lily 'o the west.
Santiano- The Highwaymen- Virtually unchanged fer 150 years.
John Barleycorn- Everybody has recorded JB an its roots go WAY back in tyme.
There be many more than can be mentioned heare. The lyrics has stood the test o' tyme an the music lives on. Now wi' a mind on the EVOlution of folk music I gives thought to the DEVOlution of contempory music. Be there songs what fits our hobby in their present form? Be there songs what need a little help ta grow old? In both cases I feels the answer be yes. Does ye not feel the wind blowin' when Mr Denver is asingin' "Calypso"? Can ye not see a tall ship in the "Last Farewell"? I offers a few that be candidates fer moldyfyin'. They be modern but for the most part obscure an rarley played-
The Wreck of the Yarmouth Castle- G Lightfoot- A half dozen words changed an its perfect.
Southern Cross- S Stills- Good as is.
Orinoco Flow- Enya- Lottsa backup singers ta pull this one off.
I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home- G F Railroad- As good as it gets.
Dogtown- H Chapin- Perfect.
Another option is ta be Filkin'. This involves takin a familiar tune and puttin lyrics 'o yer own wi' it. Not as easy as it sounds but still fun ta play with.
So wot think ye? Played wi' a swaggarin' manner in a convincin' tongue, would ye be callin' heresey or no?
